Like many others, I’ve been intrigued by the recent launch of ChatGPT from OpenAI. After asking a variety of questions to test the AI, I began wondering how I could best utilize this system. I returned to my team’s personal development matrix and decided to try using ChatGPT for product copy. I asked ChatGPT to provide guidance on how to use it for this purpose, and this is what it suggested:

Using chatgpt for in-app product copy can be an effective way to create engaging and persuasive content for your app. Chatgpt is a language model developed by OpenAI that can generate human-like text based on a given prompt. It can be used to write product descriptions, marketing copy, and other types of content.

Here are some steps you can follow to use chatgpt for in-app product copy:

  1. Determine your goals: Before you start writing, it’s important to know what you want to achieve with your in-app product copy. Are you trying to persuade users to make a purchase, or are you simply providing information about your product? Knowing your goals will help you focus your writing and create more effective copy.
  2. Gather information: To write effective product copy, you need to have a good understanding of your product and your target audience. Gather information about your product’s features, benefits, and target audience, and keep it handy as you write.
  3. Choose a prompt: Chatgpt works by generating text based on a prompt, so you’ll need to choose one that reflects your goals and the information you’ve gathered. For example, you might start with a prompt like “Write a product description for an app that helps users manage their finances.”
  4. Use chatgpt: Once you have a prompt, you can use chatgpt to generate text. To do this, you’ll need to use the chatgpt API or a tool like OpenAI’s GPT-3 Playground. Simply enter your prompt and chatgpt will generate text based on it.
  5. Edit and revise: As with any writing, it’s important to edit and revise your in-app product copy to ensure that it’s clear, concise, and persuasive. Use chatgpt’s generated text as a starting point and make changes as needed to make sure your copy is effective.

By following these steps, you can use chatgpt to create in-app product copy that is engaging, persuasive, and effective at driving conversions.

In practice, I tried ChatGPT by writing a prompt for a conversion screen we are working on. My first prompt was: “Write me copy for an in-app screen that will explain to expecting parents the value of making a financial contribution in their child today rather than doing it later. The goal is to have them set a recurring contribution.”

ChatGPT’s response was a bit too long, so I revised my prompt to: “Now make this into 50 words.”

ChatGPT’s revised response was much more concise and useful.

While ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for product designers, like it called out, it’s important to keep in mind that it still requires some curation to ensure that the output is consistent with the brand’s tone and follows proper naming conventions. I plan to continue using ChatGPT in my work over the coming months and will provide updates on its effectiveness in daily use.
